Get to Know Us

The Caitlin Scarberry Memorial Award was established to honor the memory of Caitlin Scarberry, who died from brain cancer in October, 2021.Caitlin had become a successful software engineer and was working for a very large tech company. Caitlin’s prime motivation was to make the world better. Whether it was her boss at work, or her friends and teachers from high school or friends and professors at UCSB, everyone who knew her spoke of her integrity, kindness, work ethic and brilliance.
She also had a passion for a large variety of interests ranging from fantasy fiction, Anime, video games, history, and economics to Broadway musicals, stained glass, painting, sewing, music and crocheting.  She was an excellent writer and received an award in High School from the English department for writing. She was also a passionate reader and read a very large variety of genres. She wrote fan fiction that is on Archive of Our Own.
Caitlin developed a love of computer programming at a very young age and taught herself several programming languages. She was drawn to the field by the seemingly limitless possibilities it offered for creating things. She went to summer coding camps in middle school and designed a video game. She attended Santa Susana High School where she blossomed and made wonderful friends. While attending SSHS she took two years of computer classes including AP computer science. For her senior project in high school she wrote an optical recognition program for reading and playing sheet music called Nightingale. It is Java based and open sourced. She was a National Merit Scholar and received a Regent Scholarship for UCSB where she received her Bachelor's degree in 2018 and Master's degree in 2019. She had hoped to go on to pursue a PhD after working in the field for a few years. She often spoke about being the only female in the room in her classes. Through her actions and contributions, she sought to encourage other women to follow her path and pursue careers in Computer Science and Computer Engineering and make a positive impact on the world.
